Subject: Good blog hunting, [firstname]

Hey [firstname],

Did you know there's a blog for practically every subject – you may well have one yourself – so finding some in your niche shouldn't be too difficult. Simply do a search in Google for your niche + “blog” and you should be presented with a list of several hundred, even for the most obscure of niches.

Finding a GOOD blog, and particularly a good blog that accepts guest postings is another matter.  A lot of blogs aren't very good – just the owner's musings written in a rambling style.  Owners of good (and popular) blogs tend to be very protective of their sites. They know the key to being popular, and what brings visitors back time and time again, are well-written articles packed full of useful information. 

So the first step to successful guest posting is tracking down these good blogs.  This can be a time-consuming process involving many hours of painstaking research; but the thing is, you'll know a good blog when you see it.  They stand out like an oasis in the desert.

Once you've found a good blog, subscribe to it, read all the articles and posts (go as far back as possible) and comment on some of them to build a rapport with the owner.  Make a note of what's been covered on the blog, but also try and think of things that HAVEN'T been covered.  These are going to form the basis of your guest post topics. You'll also want to familiarize yourself with the style on the blog.  Check how long the posts generally are, the writing style, the spelling and punctuation – that sort of thing.

Do this for every good blog you can find in your niche.  If possible you'll need to build a list of around ten blogs.  Rank them in order of preference, with the blog you'd most like to write for at the top – I'll explain why tomorrow.
